Patrice A. Harris, MD

President-elect, American Medical Association

Harris, the first African-American woman elected president of the American Medical Association, will begin her yearlong term in June 2019. Trained in child/adolescent and forensic psychiatry, the Atlanta-based psychiatrist has served on the physicians' membership organization's Board of Trustees since 2011, including a term as chair from 2016 to 2017. Since 2014, Harris has chaired the AMA's Opioid Task Force, which implements practices aimed at ending the opioid epidemic by collaborating with state, specialty and independent healthcare organizations. In addition to sitting on the boards for the American Psychiatric Association and the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association, the graduate of the West Virginia University School of Medicine was the director of Health Services for Fulton County, Georgia, which includes Atlanta. She led the county's health-related programs and pushed for the integration of public, behavioral and primary healthcare services.
