Tuskegee University

Tyrin Kirkland

Year in School: Senior
Major/Minor: Accounting
Expected Graduation: 2019

Extracurricular Activities:
Booker T Washington once stated in his book, Up From Slavery, that it was a "debt of honor" to pay his time, services, and money to the institution. Hence, throughout my matriculation at Tuskegee, I have made it a privilege and not a duty to serve my campus and the community. I have had the pleasure to be a part of many different clubs and organizations including serving as a Mister Rockefeller Hall, New Student Orientation Leader, a Next Step Up Mentor and Mr. Next Step Up 2017-2018, Tuskegee University President's Men and Women's Leadership Program, Tuskegee University Ambassador Program, parliamentarian of the National Association of Black accountants, an Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science peer mentor, a member of Palm2Palm non-profit organization, executive sponsor and men's leadership counsel for Underclassmen Leadership Academy, a member of the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity incorporated and is now having the honor to serve as the 21st Mister Tuskegee University. I truly have a passion for success and achievement, and live by the motto "we should aspire to inspire, before we expire." I strongly believe in the importance of volunteering, hard work, empowering African Americans, and strive to leave a mark everywhere I can.

Career Goals:
I have always been extremely talented and have a high acumen in mathematics, specifically in accounting and finance. Hence I came into Tuskegee as a dual major in accounting and finance. As a graduating senior, I plan to use my prior experience in accounting and finance to work for a big four corporation. While working for one of the big four corporations I plan to pursue my graduate degree with goals of becoming a certified public accountant and eventually opening my own accounting firms, specializing with clients in sports and urban communities. Throughout my reign as Mister Tuskegee University, I plan to educate the student body and community with finance forums, empowerment conferences, and will to continue to serve the University and community with pride.

What is your most memorable contribution as a Campus King?:
Although my reign as the 21st Mr. Tuskegee has just begun, my most memorable and greatest contribution thus far has been fully applying my platform and seeing it transpired to my community and the student body. I boldly stood on the platform of R.E.A.L , resilient, eclectic, authentic leadership; encouraging all students to be real, be true, be you. I did not limit my platform to just my university and its surrounding communities but this summer I had the opportunity to serve my hometown community in an eclectic way, staying true to my roots. I did this by serving alongside my classmate and founder of the Palm2Palm non profit organization, in an effort to feed the homeless of the Birmingham community. As I returned back to Tuskegee for the fall semester I was pleased to have impacted and inspired the males of the freshman class, as they set a record of having 8 males run for Mr. Freshman. In continued efforts, I am extremely passionate about individuals following their dreams and executing their full potential, so I plan to continue to use my platform to hold my piers accountable, empower others, and continue to leave my mark and encourage others to want to leave and create a legacy of their own.
