‘Black Panther’ Inspired Wakandacon Comes to Chicago This Summer

Black Panther-inspired convention called Wakandacon will be held in Chicago this summer to celebrate “Afro-futurism, tech, and entertainment,” event organizers announced on Thursday.

The three-day event was organized by siblings David, Ali, and Matt Barthwell,

“The moment we saw Wakanda in film, we wanted a space to gather and talk about everything African-Americans are passionate about. Afro-Futurism is about imagining a future for Black people all around the world, said Ali Barthwell, co-founder of Wakandacon in the press release. “Wakandacon is a space for Black people to look past the present and into our future.”

Ever since its February release, Black Panther has broken box office records for Disney and has been a cultural phenomenon.

Wakandacon will be held from Aug. 3-5 at the Hilton Downtown Chicago and will feature “panels, lectures, workshops, and live entertainment.”

“Our people have been hungry for something like this for a very long time, and I hope that Wakandacon only adds to the fire,” says David Barthwell.
