Badu Backed Kaepernick by Taking a Knee at Soul Train Awards

Soul songstress Erykah Badu hosted the 2017 Soul Train Awards for the third consecutive year on Sunday night. Prior to delivering her Badu witticisms and commentary on the strange political era in which we reside, the “On & On singer took part in a movement propelled by Colin Kaepernick last August.

Following an opening performance from R&B trio SWV, Badu took a knee on the stage. The gesture was intended to demonstrate an intolerance of police brutality. To add to the moment’s poignancy, she knelt while wearing a hoodie.

“I know I usually do a big elaborate musical number, but right here, right now, I feel I need to this,” Badu said to the audience during the awards show which aired on BET.

The outspoken singer’s gesture was immediately met with a standing ovation.

“This is for Kap. Kap we appreciate you, for giving your life, giving up your dream, because you believe in us.

Badu then took a jab at filmmaker and alleged predator Harvey Weinstein.

“And now I’ma get my a** up before Harvey Weinstein tries to come out here and put his hands on me,” she said to howls of laughter.

The Twitter account for the athlete’s youth campaign Know Your Rights acknowledged Badu’s support and the Kaepernick himself retweeted their post.

Kaepernick has filed a grievance against NFL team owners for conspiring in his unemployment during the 2017 football season. Many believe the free agent remains unsigned as a result of his protest and have chosen to boycott the NFL.
