Lifetime Producing Docuseries & Movie on R. Kelly’s Alleged Sexual Misconduct

The sexual misconduct allegations that have hovered over R. Kelly throughout much of his career will be the subject of not only a new Lifetime movie but of a docuseries produced by the network.

As a part of its Violence Against Women public affairs campaign, Lifetime will feature programming designed to teach women how to spot abusive behavior, including an investigative series into the women “who have fallen under the toxic spell of R&B singer R. Kelly,” to be executive produced by author dream hampton.

“Partnering with advocacy groups and influential thought leaders, Lifetime will provide a platform to give women a voice where they have previously been unheard,” the network said in a statement.

The announcement comes weeks after the resignations of three key members of Kelly’s team and just days after an alleged victim claimed the “Ignition” singer gave her an STD. The songwriter has been accused of having inappropriate relationships with underage girls and of-age women believed by some to be held against their will in a sex cult. Kelly has claimed the women who live with him are “consenting adults.”

#MeToo creator Tarana Burke recently asked radio legend Tom Joyner to stop playing the singer-songwriter’s music, which he agreed to do. Kelly also took to Instagram to apologize to fans after an appearance was canceled because of “rumors.”

Born and raised in Compton, California, Jessica Bennett began her career as an intern at The Oakland Post, and later, The Source Magazine. She went on to write for respected hip hop publications such as DJ Booth and Hip Hop DX before becoming the Urban Editor of pop culture website, Wetpaint.com. She joined Ebony as the Entertainment Editor August 2017. Bennett has interviewed such names as Vanessa Williams, Spike Lee, Tyra Banks, Forest Whitaker, Magic & Cookie Johnson and several others.
