‘Black Panther’s’ Letitia Wright Says She is ‘Proud’ to Represent Guyana in Film (VIDEO)

Letitia Wright, Black Panther

Black Panther breakout star Letitia Wright is “proud” that she represents Guyana on screen.

The actress, who also plays Princess Shuri in Avengers: Infinity War, said there isn’t much Guyanese representation in TV or film since the hit British sitcom Desmondabout a Guyanese man who ran a barbershop, ended in the ’90s.

“I grew up on Desmond and he represented Guyana. He made us proud,” she said. “Since then, I haven’t seen anyone from Guyana do it like that.”

Wright said she didn’t think about what it meant to have Guyana represented on screen because throughout her acting career she didn’t get much feedback on how important it was until Black Panther’s success.

“This has made people really proud, and I am grateful for that,” Wright said. “It is kind of overwhelming because you don’t want everybody to put so much pressure on you. I just want to still be able to be a human being and grow, but as a whole being from my country and representing them and making them proud is cool.”

Black Panther arrived on digital on May 8 and Blu-ray and DVD on May 15.
