Taraji P. Henson Skips MET Gala to Attend John Singleton’s Funeral

The biggest names in entertainment showed up and showed out during Monday’s 2019 MET Gala in New York City. Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, however, changed her plans and instead choose to say her final goodbyes to director John Singleton, who was laid to rest in Los Angeles the same day.

Via Instagram, Henson shared a note sent to her from designer Vera Wang that read, “Dear Taraji, thinking of you tonight. Miss you. Lots of love, Vera.” The Acrimony star then explained that she had plans to attend the star-studded affair with Wang but simply couldn’t once it was decided Monday would be Singleton’s homegoing service.

“Y’all I was supposed to be @verawang date tonight for the #metgala but as some of you may know I had to bury my dear sweet friend #JohnSingleton today in LA. I had to back out of the #Met because My head would NOT have been in the game.”

She continued, “@verawang is such a classy Lady she sent flowers and totally understood my position. I LOVE YOU FOREVER @verawang NEXT YEAR WILL BE THE CHARM FOR US!!! GOOD LUCK TONIGHT!!! 🙏🏾💋💋💋.”

Henson was one of many who shared their grief over the passing of the filmmaker. Singleton gave the Proud Mary star her “big break” in 2001 film Baby Boy and was by her side during her Hollywood Walk-of-Fame induction ceremony in January.

“YOU saw in me what I did not see in myself,” Henson wrote. “YOU taught me about the power of my eyes!!! MY GOD MY GOD!!! I will FOREVER miss you my dear sweet John Singleton.”
