SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It was a festive couple of days for a good cause August 26-27 as the Fourth Annual Allen W. Warren Celebrity Golf Classic and VIP Reception was held in California’s capital city. It kicked off Sunday when host Allen W. Warren, a two-term member of the Sacramento City Council, welcomed athletes, celebrities and guests to the VIP reception, which featured a special night of entertainment, before nearly 150 people teed off at one of the region’s most prestigious golf courses.
Hall of Fame athletes such as Marshall Faulk and Jerome Bettis were joined at Del Paso Country Club by a number of notable athletes from professional baseball, basketball and football, including: Charles Oakley, Gerald Henderson, David “Smokey” Gaines, Michael Merriweather, Mervyn Fernandez, Stephon Paige, Bobby Jackson, Kevin Brown, Jacob Brumfield, Clyde Daniels, Rick Jennings, Ricky Jordan, Ron Fellows, Dokie Williams, Pat Gomez, Leon Lee, Jerry Nielson, Greg Vaughn, Darius Turner, Eric Wright, Harold Pressley, Brad Gunter Jr. and Fernando Vina.
The Sunday reception, held at The Revival inside the beautiful Sawyer Hotel in downtown Sacramento, was highlighted by Hitzville Motown Review led by vocalist Jin Jin Reeves. Award-winning actor and human rights activist Danny Glover was also on hand to greet guests, sponsors and supporters at both Sunday’s VIP reception and Monday’s full-field golf tournament. Ebony Media Operations Vice Chairman Willard Jackson also attended the two-day event.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Stanford Settlement Neighborhood, which is a Sacramento-based nonprofit organization that helps to build healthy communities through individual, family and neighborhood services.
The Allen W. Warren Celebrity Golf Classic was conceived about five years ago by Warren, whose company, New Faze Development, Inc. has developed more than 2,000 homes since 1990 in Northern California’s urban areas. The intent of the Classic is to raise funds that would be donated to nonprofit organizations that focus their work on serving underserved communities throughout the Sacramento region.
“I want to thank our sponsors, celebrities and friends for their generous support in helping to make this year’s Classic a memorable event,” said Warren, who achieved the golf highlight of the tournament by hitting a hole-in-one on the 146-yard 12th hole. “The tournament was a big success.”
