FBI Investigating Black Man Found Hanging from Tree in Mississippi

A Black Mississippi man was found hanging from a tree earlier this month.

According to WMGT-TV, the discovery of 21-year-old Willie Andrew Jones, Jr.’s body was reported to Scott County police on Feb. 8. Police say the death appears to be a suicide and the young man and his girlfriend had a disagreement shortly before his death. His body was found in Forest, MS, which the outlet reports is not far from the woman’s home.

Investigators claim there is no proof the hanging was racially motivated but his family believes otherwise. They’ve contacted the Mississippi chapter of the NAACP.

“The family never believed it was a suicide, and that’s why they reached out to us,” Mississippi NAACP President Charles Hampton said according to the Clarion Ledger.

The organization is urging officials to further investigate the death and has sought the aide of the FBI who is now looking into the case.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Marshall Fisher said according to WGMT-TV. “All evidence is being considered and at this time, no conclusions have been reached.”

The outlet also reports shots were fired into the girlfriend’s home on Wednesday although no one was hurt.

According to Jones’ initial autopsy, his death was a result of hanging although officials are awaiting more information.
