London Breed Sworn in As First Black Female Mayor of San Francisco

London Breed, San Francisco Mayor

London Breed made history when she was officially sworn in as the first Black female mayor of San Francisco on Wednesday.

During her swearing-in ceremony on the steps of City Hall, Breed said she was committed to making San Francisco, which was recently named the city with the most expensive rents in the world, more accessible to live in for people from all backgrounds, HuffPost reports.

“I lived it. I will be your mayor too,” she said while speaking to San Francisco residents living in public housing.

“It never seemed possible that I could one day serve as Mayor,” she wrote in a tweet on the day of her swearing-in ceremony. “I would not be here today without the community that believed in me. I will do everything I can to afford those opportunities to the next generation.”

D’vonte Graham, President of the Black Young Democrats, told HuffPost that Breed’s win is an inspiration for young Black youth living in San Francisco.

“Every kid is looking up today,” he said. “Especially if you’re a black kid in San Francisco, with everything that’s been going on in national politics, I just believe they’re dreaming a little bit bigger today.”
