Starbucks Will Close 8,000 Stores to Conduct Racial Bias Education

Starbucks, Starbucks Manager

Starbucks will close over 8,000 of stores on May 29 to conduct training in racial bias, CNN Money reports.

The news comes after two Black men were arrested at a Philadelphia location last week after a manager called the police saying they were trespassing after refusing to let them use the bathroom because they were not paying customers.

Multiple people at the location said that the men were waiting for another person. After outrage, calls for a boycott and an apology from the CEO, the manager departed from the company.

“I’ve spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it,” said Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson in a statement. “While this is not limited to Starbucks, we’re committed to being a part of the solution.”

Johnson met with the men on Monday and apologized about the incident that has caused a national stir.

“Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.”
