Man Wanted in Multiple States After Scamming $80K from Love Interest

John Martin Hill, 35, was arrested Wednesday in Tennessee after allegedly scamming $80,000 from a woman he met on a dating website. After his arrest, authorities learned that he was wanted in several states for committing similar scams, CNN reports.

Hill reportedly began a relationship in March with a woman from Alpharetta, Georgia, on Match.com. The couple reportedly went on a date the same day they matched and decided to get married within one week of meeting.

According to CNN, Hill told his soon-to-be wife that he was a millionaire and the couple decided to purchase a home together.

“During their short romance, he convinced her that they were in love and wanted to buy a house together,” authorities told the news network. “They went house hunting and selected a home they were interested in.”

The woman gave Hill $80,000 to help purchase the home; once he received the money, Hill cut off all contact with her.

Hill, who has changed his name at least five times in two and a half years, reportedly lived with another woman and child in Duluth, Georgia. As news of his arrest spread, authorities discovered that he was wanted in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia for reportedly committing similar crimes.

Hill is being held on $500,000 bond while he awaits extradition to Georgia, where he faces a felony charge of theft by deception.
