Sybrina Fulton, Mother of Trayvon Martin, Running for Office in Miami

Sybrina Fulton is running for a seat on the Miami-Dade County Commission. She is the mother of Trayvon Martin, who was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in 2012. Zimmerman claimed he feared for his life and was later acquitted of murder using Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law as his defense.

Fulton announced her decision to run Saturday in a statement obtained by the Miami Herald. “Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our communities and make them safer. But the work is not done. I am proud to announce that I will run to represent District 1 on the county commission.”

If elected, she hopes to use her platform to promote gun control through more thorough background checks and limiting private gun sales.

“Our county must continue moving forward so our families are safe from violence, can afford to live in Miami-Dade, and have access to good paying jobs. I am ready to take on these issues and many others in county government.”

Fulton is running for current District one commissioner Barbara Jordan’s seat, which will be relinquished in 2020 due to term limits. She is running against Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert.
